Agent: Lester's Contract Demands Didn't Fuel Trade Talks

Oct 1, 2014 12:10 PM

Jon Lester's rumored contract demands didn't fuel the Boston Red Sox to discuss the left-hander in trades, according to his agent.

A published report claimed that the Red Sox were prompted to listen to offers for Lester once informed of what it would take to re-sign him.

"The discussions we had with the Red Sox were confidential and will remain that way," Seth Levinson, Lester's agent, said. "There is no truth to the report, and I am not going to guess why it was written or the basis for that report."

The report, published in The Boston Globe, citing a major league source, went on to say that Lester was seeking "a competitive offer consistent with the market" and speculated that would be in the range of $22 million to $24 million annually.

Lester, Red Sox Agree To Table Talks

Jul 25, 2014 8:59 PM

Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino confirmed Thursday morning that the team and Jon Lester have agreed to table contract negotiations until after the season.

"It's done in part out of respect for Jon Lester and his desire to postpone this until after the season," Lucchino told WEEI. "He's on an extraordinary roll. His last five or six games, his ERA is I don't know, 0.90 or something like that.

"He's leading this team, leading the rotation, and his very strong preference ... was not to have his family and himself distracted and focused on something other than pitching and winning baseball games."

Red Sox owner John Henry made a similar proclamation Wednesday night in an email to the Boston Herald.

Lester told the Boston Globe on Thursday that the postponement of the contract talks won't impact his desire to stay with the Red Sox -- even for a relative discount.

"Doesn't mean anything," Lester said told the Globe. "There's been plenty of guys who have taken less to come back. Mikey Lowell had more years and money with the Phillies, and he came back. It's not the end-all for everybody. I've expressed to them I want to be here."

Red Sox, Uehara Haven't Discussed Extension

Oct 31, 2014 11:44 AM

The Boston Red Sox have not spoken to Koji Uehara about a contract past the 2014 season.

"So far, there have been no talks," Uehara said through translator C.J. Matsumoto. "I'll leave it all up to my agent, but right now I haven't heard anything."

Uehara is 39, but there is some thought that the Red Sox may consider offering the pitcher a qualifying offer in the coming offseason (estimated to be around $15 million for one year).

Since becoming the Red Sox closer on June 26, 2013, Uehara has saved 40 of 44 regular-season games, striking out 118 and walking just eight. His ERA over that span is 1.00 with a batting average against of .139.

The Minnesota Twins have engaged in talks with Kurt Suzuki about a contract extension, but the two sides are far apart.

The negotiations have been characterized as "exploratory."

If the Twins aren't able to extend him, Suzuki could be a significant trade chip ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
